Okay - initially it looks like this store is cheaper right? But if I remove the items from last week that I didn't get today (mushrooms, yogurt, pirates booty, dark chocolate and quinoa - totaling $13.91) That leaves the Whole Foods total at $99.79!! Surprise! Not only was Whole Foods cheaper, but a significantly larger number of those things were organic last week.

There are a couple more slight adjustments, for example, there's no bulk at Valu Market, so those items (almonds, quinoa, sunflower seeds and lentils) were more expensive, but only because I had to buy more of them. However, at Valu Market, the Bob's Red Mill Quinoa was $11.00 a pound!! If you recall, the 1/2 lb of quinoa I bought at whole foods was only $2.00. I think that the almonds were roughly the same. The sunflower seeds were cheaper in bulk. And the lentils were cheaper at Valu Market.

On the whole I must say that I'm super surprised that Whole Foods is cheaper. But I really wish they would carry more local stuff. One interesting thing, I think there is a greater markup on so called "health food" items at Valu Market - check out the differences between
tofu: VM = 3.49 / WF = 1.50
tempe: VM = 3.99 / WF = 2.99 (this is the exact same brand)
rice milk: VM = 3.45 / WF = 1.69
hummus: VM = 4.99 / WF = 2.49

Interesting!
